Sitges reinforces its commitment to fighting LGBTIQ-phobia

The goal is to raise awareness of discrimination and violence against members of the LGBTIQ+ community

On Saturday 17 May, Sitges will be hosting a series of cultural and advocacy events to commemorate the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT). The Councillor’s Office for Social Rights, City Residents and Equality is supporting the activities organised by Colors Sitges Link with the goal of raising awareness about discrimination and violence against members of the LGBTIQ+ community based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.

The City Council ceremony will be the main event in the programme and will take place Saturday at 6:30 p.m. by Platja de l’Estanyol at the Passeig Marítim monument against homophobia. The event will include the reading of the Government of Catalonia’s official manifesto and the laying of flowers at the Passeig Marítim monument.

Afterwards, the microphone will be handed over to members of the public, who will have the opportunity to read poems, sing or express themselves in other ways. There will also be a memorial space for victims of LGBTIQ+-phobia, where people can leave candles and flowers.

At 6 p.m., prior to the City Council ceremony, there will be a peaceful protest march starting at Pl. Ajuntament and winding through Carrer Major, Carrer Parellades, Carrer Primer de Maig and Passeig de la Ribera before reaching Passeig Marítim 10, the site of the Monument Against Homophobia known as the Pink Triangle.

Over the course of the day, there will also be other cultural and recreational activities such as a walk for LGBTIQ+ visibility, a workshop on sexual self-esteem for all and a Eurovision party against LGBTIQ-phobia.

These activities for IDAHOBIT are part of Pride Month in Sitges, an initiative led by Sitges City Council together with local organisations. This year’s theme is “Open the Door to Pride 2025”, and seeks to celebrate sexual and gender diversity in the LGBTIQ+ community. Highlights will include Sitges Pride from 5 to 8 June, a series of cultural, social and advocacy events culminating on 8 June with the Pride Parade, which as every year will start at 5 p.m. on Passeig de la Ribera. The events for Pride Day (28 June) will soon be announced on social media and on the official city website, www.sitges.cat.
